Getting Started with TF-CBT: Making Assessment Fun, Finding the Right Cases, and Successfully Launching Treatment

About this Training

If you’re struggling to get your TF-CBT cases off the ground after being trained or you want to streamline your assessment process, this course offers some important guidance about ways you and your clients can jump right into the TF-CBT pool with confidence and competence. This course offers a structured outline for completing a trauma-informed comprehensive clinical assessment in as few as 3 sessions. It incorporates standardized assessments with input from the client and caregiver while engaging them in treatment and providing feedback on the assessment results ideally by the third session.

 
A common error we make as clinicians is thinking we have fully assessed a case when we have only screened it. This course helps you know the difference. Leave training having made friends with standardized assessments; learn how to use them as an engagement tool! Discover strategies that help you determine what your gradual exposure needs to be to throughout the PRACTICE components, and determine how to individualize TF-CBT to best meet your client’s and their family’s needs. Incorporate psychoeducation normalizing trauma symptoms into pre-treatment assessment in ways that are fun, creative, and make sense to children and families. Get the foundational knowledge you need so you and your clients can start strong.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to:

• Identify at least 4 criteria suggesting a case might benefit from TF-CBT and 3 criteria suggesting a case might not be appropriate.

• Develop a plan for how to incorporate standardized assessment measures into their day-to-day clinical assessment process of children and families who have experienced trauma.

• Articulate the impact of trauma on children to caregivers and children in a developmentally appropriate, meaningful way that reduces shame and stigma while instilling hope and engages them in TF-CBT.

• Demonstrate at least 3 clinical interventions clinicians can use to assess trauma symptoms in children while simultaneously building rapport.

• Summarize how standardized assessment can be a useful tool for engaging children and caregivers in treatment and motivate future skills practice.

Who should attend this training?
This training is appropriate for master’s level clinicians and above, but interns/students who are working on their master’s degrees will also benefit. Seasoned clinicians will find these clinical skills enhance their assessment skills and interventions in TF-CBT and other evidence-based treatment models. Training is interactive with engaging activities and opportunities to practice the skills.
