About this Training

Providing evidence-based trauma treatment comes with complex ethical decisions—often in real time, across systems, and under pressure. This highly engaging training brings together the core ethical principles shared across mental health disciplines and applies them directly to the realities of TF-CBT, AF-CBT, and multidisciplinary work.
 
Participants will deepen their ethical reasoning, sharpen their boundary-setting skills, and increase their confidence navigating dilemmas involving confidentiality, role confusion/clarity, and client safety—while engaging in practical activities that make ethics both accessible and immediately usable.
 
We’ll break down the essential ethical values common to all mental health disciplines — including client welfare, integrity, autonomy, competence, justice, boundaries, and professional responsibility — and bring them to life through interactive comparison and discussion.

“The Boundary Spectrum” — Applying Ethics to TF-CBT & AF-CBT Cases
(Activity + Case-Based Discussion)
Participants will engage in a lively boundary spectrum activity to examine how context, culture, and model fidelity shape ethical choices. Realistic case scenarios highlight how ethical principles show up in trauma treatment.

Together we’ll explore:

• Cultural responsiveness in boundary decisions

• Managing small community complexities

• Seeking supervision or consultation

• Multidisciplinary collaboration pitfalls

 “Confidentiality Roulette” — Assessing the Limits of Confidentiality
(Case Scenarios + Group Decision-Making)
 

Using confidentiality breach requests pulled straight from clinical practice, you’ll work through:
 

• Whether information can be released

• What you would say to each party involved

• Which ethical codes and legal standards apply

• How to communicate clearly and protect client rights

This hands-on exercise strengthens clinical judgment for moments when decisions need to be made quickly and confidently.
 
Participants should have access to the internet and web cameras. Recorded self-paced training requires passing a quiz and includes verification of participation in training. 
 
Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to:

1. Identify and explain at least five fundamental ethical principles common across NASW, ACA, and AAMFT Codes of Ethics, and articulate how these principles guide ethical decision-making in trauma-focused treatment.
 
2. Analyze boundary dilemmas and role ambiguity presented in TF-CBT and AF-CBT case scenarios, and demonstrate the ability to formulate appropriate, ethically justified responses that consider cultural, contextual, and systemic factors.
 
3. Evaluate confidentiality dilemmas encountered in multidisciplinary trauma work and determine when information may be disclosed, identify relevant ethical and legal considerations, and adhere to best practice standards. three ways to structure TF-CBT sessions with young children for success.​
