"You Fix My Child": How to Get Out of this Role as a Child Therapist

About this Training

Most child therapists find caregivers expecting the therapist to “fix” a child or teen for them to be a primary source of stress and frustration. Flip the script and teach caregivers how to “out therapist” the therapist instead!

Learn how operationalizing symptoms with the caregiver and tracking symptoms weekly helps get you out of that role. Invite the caregiver to be more curious about and reflect on what is getting their child’s symptoms started and what is maintaining them. They may discover their own response is a contributing factor and wish to alter that; they might also discover the power their own positive attention can have on the problem. Learn tips and tricks for inspiring caregivers to use Functional Behavioral Analysis to discern which parenting strategies are the best tool for the job. Help caregivers who have given up want a seat at the table for helping change their children’s behavior.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how weekly symptom tracking can be used as an engagement strategy to activate caregivers as collaborative partners in their children’s treatment

  • Implement Functional Behavioral Analysis with caregivers to understand what is driving their children’s symptoms and behaviors, and how they might unwittingly be reinforcing negative symptoms in their children.

  • Identify at least 2 ways clinicians can engage caregivers in shifting their thinking about their role in their child’s treatment and enhance their own feelings of competence and mastery
