Engaging Minimizing and Disbelieving Caregivers in the Change Process

About this Training

Multidisciplinary team members encounter families at different stages of change and various degrees of openness to engage in services. No matter the discipline, each of us has those cases come to mind where we feel like we are pulling a determined and reluctant donkey up a hill! Participants will have an opportunity to reflect upon what works and what doesn’t in terms of shifting to a more cooperative, collaborative working relationship.
 
Training examples will include disbelieving or challenging caregivers, those who minimize or deny, and techniques for showing humility and respect for families whose cultural background, sexual orientation, race, or values differ from the provider. This interactive workshop is grounded in engagement research but uses video demonstration and interactive activities to help participants practice the skills necessary to engage even the most challenging or reluctant caregivers.
 
Participants should have access to the internet and web cameras. Recorded self-paced training requires passing a quiz and includes verification of participation in training. 
 
Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to:

• Describe two effective strategies for engaging avoidant or disbelieving caregivers in services

• Identify at least two changes they commit to making in their setting or their own approach to working with challenging caregivers

• Analyze and reflect upon two approaches for building community and engaging families whose lived experience differs from theirs

Who should attend this training?
This training is appropriate for bachelor’s level social workers, victim advocates, and administrators, but master’s level clinicians, clinical supervisors, interns/students who are working on their master’s degrees will also benefit. Seasoned clinicians will find these clinical skills enhance their engagement skills and interventions in TF-CBT, AF-CBT, and other evidence-based treatment models. Training is interactive with engaging activities and skill demonstration.
