Understanding TF-CBT
What is TF-CBT?
TF-CBT is considered the "gold standard" for treating children ages 3–18 who have experienced trauma. With 25+ randomized controlled trials behind it, it has the strongest evidence base of any childhood trauma treatment.
80% of children receiving TF-CBT show significant reductions in post-traumatic stress symptoms, depressive symptoms, and caregiver distress, often in as few as 4 months.
The model is brief and time-limited: most cases complete treatment in 12–24 sessions. It includes psychoeducation, parenting and coping skills, emotion regulation, cognitive coping, trauma processing, and gradual exposure throughout.
Caregivers are valued as part of the treatment team. Clinicians have flexibility in defining that role - biological parent, foster parent, extended family, child welfare worker, or some combination.
Kids graduate from TF-CBT. They're done. They go back to doing the fun things in their lives instead of coming to therapy. They don't need another treatment after this - and that's part of what sustains us as clinicians.
The Path to National Certification
Becoming a Nationally Certified TF-CBT Clinician requires:

Master's degree or higher in a mental health discipline

Active mental health license in your state or province (or working toward licensure, see below)

Completion of the TF-CBT Web 2.0 self-study course as a prerequisite

Attending live training (two or more days) with an approved national trainer

Participating in at least 9 of 12 group consultation calls and sharing case presentations

Completing three TF-CBT treatment cases - at least one during consultation, with caregivers actively participating in at least two

Using a standardized trauma symptom measure pre- and post-treatment with each case

Passing the TF-CBT Therapist Certification Program Knowledge Test
I'm one of a limited number of national trainers approved through the TF-CBT developers' Train-the-Trainer program - my work has counted toward national certification since 2017. More than 3,000 clinicians have trained with me, and 95% complete the full consultation series.
In Graduate School or Pre-Licensure?
Many of my trainees complete TF-CBT training and consultation while they're still in school or building toward licensure, then meet the remaining requirements as they advance in their careers. The full licensure path typically takes 2–3 years after graduate training, so starting your TF-CBT training now gives you a real head start on your career helping trauma-exposed children. Once you are fully licensed in your state or province, you'll have everything you need to apply for national certification. There are separate fees from the TF-CBT developers to complete TF-CBT Therapist Certification for reviewing your application and for the knowledge-based test.
