MY "WHY" - WHY I TRAIN THE WAY I DO

For a more in-depth look at how I train, take a look at this short video

For 30 years, I've specialized in one thing: helping children exposed to trauma heal — and training the clinicians who make that possible. I've treated more than 2,000 children and families and trained over 3,000 clinicians across the country. That breadth of experience shapes everything about how I train.

I believe relationships and great trainings are co-created. It's my job to help you be great at your job — and I'm committed to helping you be exceptional and love doing this work.

My Why
My Approach

MY APPROACH

This is a uniquely challenging time to be a therapist. We have never been more needed, had more asked of us, and had less energy to give.

I live in the real world with you. I'm determined to make your life easier and this work sustainable while ensuring you don't have to compromise quality to do it. There is room for flexibility AND fidelity: both are important.

I help clinicians build on their existing clinical skills using a foundation of evidence-based treatment models to take their practice to the next level.

I stay humble by continuing to actively treat children, which means sharing my own mistakes and successes. My passion comes from the privilege we share in helping families heal and from the joy of learning and growing with you!

OTHERS' "WHY"

"Ashley is absolutely amazing!!! The resources, her care, her clinical judgment - all are top notch!"

"I learned more in the past 2 days than in an entire course in graduate school."

"It was amazing! The videotaped role-plays were particularly impactful. By demonstrating both effective and ineffective ways to help a client develop their trauma narrative, Ashley provided a very clear, practical roadmap. It was incredibly helpful to see those clinical nuances in action, especially when navigating such a sensitive part of the treatment."

"Ashley was GREAT! Very engaging and kept us interested. There was a good balance of lecture and role plays (something I truly hate normally). She was understanding that sitting still for five hours isn't realistic for all of us, and she was accommodating to that."

"This training was phenomenal, and I wish it could have been longer. It's impossible not to feel Ashley's passion for the topic and leave with so much new knowledge."

TRAINING COURSES & REGISTRATION

Virtual, live Training and In-Person Training

Evidence-based training only works if you can actually use it — with the real child in front of you, in the real system you're working in. That's what I teach.

Every training I offer is built around closing the gap between completing training in a model and knowing how to apply it -- like to a nine-year-old living in foster care who has an exhausted caregiver and a life that doesn't fit a protocol. You will leave knowing how to think, not just what to do. Conserve your energy for the things that matter. What matters is doing good work and helping families heal.

What to Expect from Training
and Consultation

I still see children at my local CAC. That means when I'm teaching you TF-CBT on a Tuesday, I applied it with a real child the week before — and probably made a mistake I'll tell you about. Most national trainers can't say that. I can.

My TF-CBT trainings come with 900+ clinical interventions, research articles, and tools I've built and curated over 30 years -- resources you can use immediately with your own clients. Every course I offer, regardless of model or topic, is packed with practical tools and creative approaches you won't find anywhere else.

Trainees tell me they leave with more practical resources than from any other training they've attended. I love hearing how they have applied what I shared and how it helped their clients. I believe the work should be excellent AND sustainable, which means I don't just hand you a protocol and wish you luck. I help you build it into a practice you can actually love. That means there is room for flexibility and fidelity -- you don't have to choose between doing this right and doing it in the real world. That's what I'm here for.

Who am I Outside of Work?

In my free time, I enjoy gardening, hiking, and making pottery. There is nothing that teaches nonattachment like working with clay. There are many steps along the way of creating something where things can go sideways, so a mantra potters have is, “It’s just dirt”. I met a master potter years ago and asked for her best advice on how to develop my skills. She suggested I throw and throw and throw on the wheel… and then throw everything away. Her point was well taken, if not a little intense for me. It reminds me of working on trauma narration and processing – the process is what helps kids heal, not the product.

ABOUT ME

Background

I earned my MSW from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1995 and have specialized in treating children exposed to trauma ever since -- more than 2,000 children and families over the course of my career. Most of my direct clinical experience has been in Children's Advocacy Centers and Domestic Violence shelters, and I continue to see clients at my local CAC. The CAC movement is deeply important to me, and I will always champion the impact CAC clinicians have on their communities.

One of my deepest passions is helping providers who are new to the field get off to a strong start — building confidence, clinical skill, and a sustainable relationship with this work from the very beginning. I love partnering with universities and training programs to bring evidence-based clinical training to emerging clinicians early in their careers.

For ten years I was a TF-CBT trainer at the North Carolina Child Treatment Program, building deep roots in evidence-based trauma treatment and working alongside clinicians across the state. I also developed statewide assessment protocols for children exposed to trauma and created training and clinical programs in multiple organizations. From there I moved into national-level work with Children's Advocacy Centers, serving as the sole national trainer for TF-CBT and AF-CBT and co-trainer for TF-CBT PSB — and helped launch a national mental health training institute. During those three years I trained over 1,300 CAC clinicians and consulted with many more on their cases.

I'm now building something of my own — bringing everything I've learned from partnering with thousands of clinicians, from the national trainers who shaped my own growth, and from 30 years of direct clinical experience to you. Doing this work well results in better client outcomes, builds your compassion satisfaction, and leads to a meaningful, sustainable practice.
